of monsters and boys

For the first day of school (in Bulgaria) I thought I would share one of my poems from Scars that Never Bled. Check out this video, read the poem, and make sure to pick up a copy.

of monsters and boys

mama holds him
snug against her breast
night darkens his room
but mama lights a candle

to protect him
from darkness
from loneliness
from monsters

before he can gurgle
she whispers their secrets
in his eager ears

a monster is different
it is bigger
stronger
it can hurt us

he trembles in her arms
such a fragile thing
she soothes him
monsters are
stupid and evil
and evil never wins

we are the same
and have goodness
to protect us

mama blows out the light
kisses his frightened brow

before he learns to walk
he knows monsters are different
and he is good
